Akhanda Yoga® - Holistic Hatha
Akhanda means whole, unbroken, indivisible.
One of my teachers, Yogrishi Vishvketu (Vishva-ji), created Akhanda yoga® as a holistic approach to Hatha yoga. Akhanda yoga® emphasizes a balanced sequence of asanas (postures), pranayamas (breath), relaxation, mantra (sound) and meditation. It offers a balance between all the directional movements of the spine as well as a balance between effort and allowance - of yin and yang.
Sthira Sukham Asanam - The posture (asana) should be steady and comfortable.
This practice is a balance between checkpoints for safety and allowing for inner inquiry. Checkpoints form a foundation that allow for a safe approach to the physical practice while inner inquiry allows for an experiential practice. At its root, yoga is experiential - How does this pose feel in the body in this moment? What sensations or emotions begin to emerge as a pose is held?
